Genesis House opened its doors in Rochester to homeless and runaway youth in 1981 and serves hundreds of teens ages 16-20 each year. This 14-bed, co-ed facility is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and it is the only youth shelter in New York state that treats clients 18-20 as youth.


At Genesis House, youth receive confidential care including:

Emergency food, clothing & shelter

Medical and mental health services

Hygiene Supplies

Counseling, case management, and life skills instruction

G.E.D. enrollment/on-site Rochester City School District tutoring through the Title 1 ESEA Neglected or Delinquent Program Funds

Genesis House is a well regarded member of the Rochester/Monroe County Youth Bureau  Runaway and Homeless Youth Service Delivery System. It has won the Outstanding Asset Builder Award from the Rochester/Monroe County Youth Bureau every year since 1999. It is the only youth shelter in Rochester that serves older youth ages 19-20 as youth. The program operates in accordance with the New York State Subpart 1821 Runaway and Homeless Youth Regulations for Approved Runaway Programs. 


Genesis House is a member of the Monroe County Runaway and Homeless Youth Network, a collaboration of service providers who strive to ensure safe, accessible services to runaway and homeless youth. The programs have established a formal “24 Hours Referral Agreement” which allows the agencies to make cross-referrals and to work cooperatively and collectively to meet the needs of at-risk youth.
