THE SALVATION ARMY RECEIVES VERIZON WIRELESS HOPELINE© GRANT

- Funds will provide for homeless women impacted by domestic violence.-

Rochester, N.Y., —The Salvation Army of Greater Rochester is pleased to announce that it has received a $5,000 HopeLine Grant from Verizon Wireless and an additional $5,000 from the Verizon Foundation. These funds will provide crisis intervention to homeless women who are current victims or at-risk survivors of domestic violence, assessment and education for other women who may be at risk for domestic violence and referral to specific domestic violence community resources through The Salvation Army’s Hope House program.

Hope House, which began as a temporary women’s shelter in 1999, improves the physical, mental and spiritual health of homeless women; many of whom are escaping domestic abuse.

“I would like to thank Verizon for their continued support of Hope House and those we serve,” said Major Douglas Hart, Executive Director of The Salvation Army of Greater Rochester. “So many of those affected by domestic violence don’t seek out the help they need and we are so pleased that our generous supporters, such as Verizon, enable us to continue offering hope to those who seek it.”

Each year, approximately 960,000 domestic violence incidents take place between Americans, according to a 2013 report from the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics. About 85 percent of the victims are women; 15 percent are men. More than six million children witness violence taking place between their parents and other adults in their homes every year.
